What the service is for
Oakrule helps renters, landlords and property managers understand rental housing law. You may use it to look up rules, compare numbers with them, prepare your own letters and notices, and keep up with changes.
Follow the law
- Don't use the service to get around, evade or exploit rent limits, eviction protections, deposit rules, screening rules or any other law. Ask will not help with that.
- Don't use it to harass, threaten or retaliate against anyone, or to discriminate unlawfully, including against tenants and applicants.
- Don't use a letter or notice from the service for anything false or misleading.
- Don't use it as the only basis for a decision about a specific person, such as turning down an applicant or ending a tenancy. Read the law and get advice first.
Be honest about what it is
- Don't present our answers as legal advice, as reviewed by a lawyer, or as coming from a court or a government office.
- When you share or publish an answer, keep its citation, its date and the not-legal-advice note.
- Don't use our name to suggest that we endorse you.
Respect other people's privacy
- Don't type other people's personal details (names, phone numbers, income, health, immigration status) into questions or saved properties.
- Only save addresses you own, manage or rent, or have another legitimate reason to look up.
Don't misuse the service
- No scraping, bulk downloading or automated access outside the API.
- No overloading, probing, scanning or attacks, and no attempts to get around rate limits, sign-in or security.
- No attempts to make Ask ignore its rules, reveal its instructions, or state something as law that is not in its sources.
- No malware, spam or unlawful content.
- Don't resell or rebuild the service or its data, except as the API terms allow.
If someone breaks these rules
We may remove content, limit or suspend access, revoke API keys or close accounts. Where we can, we tell you first and give you a chance to explain. To report misuse or a security problem, write to [email protected].
