API Terms

In short

These terms

These API terms apply when you use the Oakrule API, with or without a key. They add to the Terms of Service and the Acceptable Use Policy. “You” means you and the organization you act for.

Information, not advice, for you and your users

Every response is legal information quoted from official sources, with the date it applies to. It is not legal advice and not a compliance certification.

  • When you show our data to anyone, show with it the citation or a link to the source, the as-of date, and a not-legal-advice note: the disclaimer field of the response, or wording with the same meaning.
  • Don't present results as legal advice, as reviewed by a lawyer, or as a guarantee that something complies with the law.
  • You are responsible for your product, for what you tell your users, and for your own compliance, including fair housing and consumer protection laws and the rules on the practice of law where you operate.

Keys and access

Keep your API key secret. Don't put it in apps or web pages that others can read. You are responsible for all use of your key. If it leaks, rotate it in your account and tell us. We may change or revoke keys that are misused.

Limits, usage and billing

Each plan has rate limits and a monthly allowance, shown in your account. We count requests to bill them and to keep the service fair for everyone. Paid plans are billed through Stripe as shown at checkout, including any per-call charges above your allowance. Over a limit, requests may be slowed down or refused (HTTP 429).

Caching and freshness

Laws change. You may store responses to run your product, but refresh them at least every 30 days and always show the as-of date. When we tell you that a rule has changed, stop showing the old answer.

Data you send us

Send only what a request needs, such as an address and building facts. Don't send names or other personal data of tenants or applicants. We process requests as described in the Privacy Policy.

Changes and availability

We aim to keep the API stable. Before a breaking change we give at least 30 days' notice by email or in the API docs where we can. Unless your plan says so, we don't promise a level of uptime. If we stop the API, we tell you in advance and refund paid time you could not use.

Ending

You can stop using the API at any time. We may suspend access for a breach of these terms, for non-payment, or when your use puts the service or others at risk.

Warranty and liability

The API is provided as it is. The sections No warranty, Limits on liability and Governing law of the Terms of Service apply to it.
