Depends on the year the building was built or the number of units.

Who it covers

  • Buildings with a first certificate of occupancy on or before Nov 1, 2011.
  • Buildings with 5 or more units.
  • Not buildings less than 30 years old.
  • Covers: Covers only units that were rent controlled under Ord. O-73-06 and still house a tenant who has continuously occupied since June 30, 2011, in buildings of 5 or more units.
  • Exemptions: Dwellings with four or fewer units; motels; hotels; commercial and industrial space; government-owned dwellings; federally or state preempted dwellings; subsidized units (Section 8, 202, 811); permanently decontrolled units; new construction with a CO after Nov 1, 2011.
